Q- I don't quite understand the planting guide for pruning my raspberries. I have the black raspberries (jewel) and red (caroline) varieties. These are first year plants that I planted this past spring.
For the red, if I want them to have a better fall crop, then I should wait to prune them in the late fall when they have lost their leaves, correct?
For the black, when should they be pruned and how far back? The guide says prune 4-6 canes per hill but how far back? I have some canes that are 4-5 feet and growing laterally. The guide also talks about "tipping", what is that?
A- Follow the directions from the planting guide for the blackraspberries. The tipping refers to cutting the tips of plants at 5-6 feet tall. This will promote further lateral growth this fall. In the spring you should remove any winter damage and retip any long laterals per the planting guide.
The fall raspberries will produce a bigger better crop in '05 if they are cut to the ground in the spring of '05. People who prune in the fall can see the plants start to regrow and experience severe winter damage or loss of the planting. Double cropping fall raspberries will result in less smaller berries. If you want summer berries plant a summer variety.
Caroline can produce both summer and fall, but the summer crop takes away from it's very good fall crop. I always recommend to prune to the ground in spring and harvest in the fall.
If you want summer berries, think about a summer variety.
