Q-- I recently planted strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries, and am wondering if I should pinch the blossoms this 'first' year.
I noted the reply below having to do with blueberries, but doubt the blueberries I just planted will blossom this year.
The strawberries are beginning to bloom, though - and I seem to remember hearing that it is no longer recommended or necessary to 'pinch' the first year with them. Is that correct?
What about raspberries and blackberries?
A-- The blueberries will flower this year and I recommend removing them.
Don't worry about the brambles, they will be fine.
The strawberries should have the blossoms removed, unless they are Day-neutrals or everbearers.
Q-- I've recently planted 8 blueberry bushes: five are 2-year-old plants while three are 3-year-old plants (Bluecrop) that are significantly larger and have a lot more blossoms. They've been in the ground for almost two weeks now and all are looking great so far! Each of the 3-year-old plants has hundreds of buds that are starting to blossom.
1. I have been pinching blossoms every couple of days, but I am wondering if I need to pinch ALL of the blossoms off of the 3-year-old plants. Could I leave a small fraction of the blossoms on without putting too much stress on the plants?
2. Also, I know that I should continue to pinch the blossoms next year on the 2-year-old plants, but does the same advice hold for the 3-year-old plants?
A-- Pinching the blooms helps the plant to become better established, they should be around for 25-50 years. You only have to pinch the blossoms this year, then let them bear fruit, whether they are 2 or 3 years old. Good luck and keep up the good work.
Q-- I recently received a set of Mesabi strawberries for planting this year. Since these are a mid-season variety and I was not sure which part of the planting guide to follow - do I follow the guide for June bearers or Day-neutral / everbearing for this variety? Or neither of these, in which case, do I pinch out all the flower buds the first year of growth, set the runners, etc?
A-- Mesabi should be treated just like any June bearing strawberry plant.
